Mac Apps

These apps are all for Mac OS X. Most of them are free, some are old and no longer supported (but may still be useful to some). Enjoy!

Telling Folders

Do all your folder look the same? – No longer! With this little utility, you can easily put any image on top of your folder icons to make them easily distinguishable.

QuickLook is supported, so you are not limited to images alone. Drag any file in and see a rich visual representation on top of the standard folder image. Drag a folder in to set its icon – easy.

SketchBox

SketchBox is a multifunctional yet uncluttered Sticky Notes Manager for your Mac Desktop.

You can enter text or make drawings and set individual reminders for each sticky to use them as a visual alarm clock.

Arrange all your notes in the thumbnail view, create little storyboards or comics – or just store your daily thoughts as searchable text.

Each Sticky consists of three layers: The drawing canvas, a little text editor and an intuitive alarm timer that combines the best of analog and digital clocks. While editing text you can still see your drawing in the semitransparent background and vice-versa.

You can select the active layer by clicking on one of the tabs at the right side of the note. Each Sticky remembers its active layer, so that you can continue where you left after closing the Sticky's window. You can also set a default layer for new Stickies in the preferences.

SketchBox is designed not to interrupt your workflow. You can close Stickies at any time and they will remember their position on screen and their content without bothering you with a save panel. You can stick individual notes to the Desktop if you don't want them to clutter Exposé or make them appear always on top for important things.

The drawing canvas has extensive support for graphics tablets with pressure sensitivity and you can use the backside of your pen as an eraser – just like you're used to from your "real" image editor.

Save your creations as a PNG file with alpha channel or just copy them over to other applications like Pages, Word or even Photoshop.

SketchBox also works great as a reminder. You don't have to enter numbers, just wind up the clock with your mouse by dragging or using your scroll wheel.

Please note: SketchBox is no longer in active development and there are known incompatibilities with Snow Leopard.

You can download it for free and we hope that you find it useful, but we can only offer limited support.

PhotoNotes

PhotoNotes is an easy way to attach labels to your favorite photos. You can mark friends and family, buildings, special places, whatever you like.

It is tightly integrated with the Mac OS X Address Book, so it is easy to pick a name for a label. Labels are smart: When you have birthdays in your Address Book, PhotoNotes automatically displays the age of that person, using the camera date.

Finding photos of friends is easy with PhotoNotes' extensive Spotlight support. Your albums are automatically indexed. When you search for a person from Spotlight, PhotoNotes automatically displays that person's photos and highlights him or her in the thumbnail previews.

You can also export your labelled photos as an interactive HTML page.

PhotoNotes used to be shareware, you can use this license file to register: Free_User.pn_key (right-click and select Download). Instructions how to use this license file are provided with the application.

Big Clocks

These are three Quartz Composer Clips to be used as a Screen Saver, Wallpaper or on a website. The first one is a traditional analog clock, the second and third are a little more experimental, combining analog and digital elements.

To be used as Screen Savers, the files have to be copied in the ~/Library/Screen Savers folder. You can toggle the second hand of the first one with the preferences-panel within the Screen Savers Pane. With Quartz Desktop they can also be used as your wallpaper.

If you have the Developer Tools installed, you can tinker with the internals using Quartz Composer.
